Visas for the Best European Holiday Destinations

All the European destinations listed in this article are part of the Schengen Area (except the UK). This means that, depending on your country of origin, you may need to apply for a Schengen visa.

Are you a citizen of the European Union or Schengen Area (or Associated States)? You don't need a visa to travel to these Schengen countries. All you need is a national identity card or passport valid for the duration of your stay.

Are you a citizen of a country outside the EU and Schengen Area? See whether your country is on the Schengen visa-free list or not here.

Are you going to the UK? You will need a passport (valid for the duration of your stay) and, depending on your country of origin, a tourist visa.

Do you need a short-stay Schengen visa? Go to the consulate’s website for the country you wish to visit for the information you’ll need to apply for a Schengen visa, including a list of the documents required for your application, such as proof of insurance covering medical and hospital expenses up to a minimum of €30,000. Travel insurance is required for a Schengen visa.

Which Insurance Policy for Travel in Europe?

Please note, your Schengen travel insurance policy must meet certain criteria: it must be valid in all Schengen Area countries, cover medical and hospital expenses up to at least 30,000 euros and cover repatriation.

Choose peace of mind for your Schengen visa application and when crossing the border with Schengen travel insurance policies from Europ Assistance. Starting at 3 euros, Europ Assistance's Schengen visa travel insurance covers repatriation and medical expenses of up to €60,000 in the event of illness or accident, and provides additional coverage in all Member States of the Schengen Area and European Union, as well as the United Kingdom.

Apply online and get your proof of insurance immediately, recognized and accepted by Schengen embassies and consulates worldwide.

Are you exempt from visa requirements for travel to these European countries and therefore not required to purchase travel insurance? We strongly recommend that you take out an insurance policy anyway, so that you’re covered in case of a medical emergency during your trip, reducing the impact of any unforeseen circumstances during your European holiday.
