The Best Time to Visit Scotland

The best time to visit Scotland is from April to September. To avoid peak tourist season and enjoy mild weather, choose the month of May! If you want to attend one of the many summer cultural events, such as the Highland Games, and see the dolphins, you’ll need to go in June, July or August.  

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Scotland?

Are you a citizen of the European Union or Schengen Area (or Associated States)? You can travel to the United Kingdom with a passport valid for the duration of your stay.  

Are you a citizen of a country outside the EU and Schengen Area? To enter the UK, you will also need a passport (valid for the duration of your stay) and, depending on your country of origin, a tourist visa.  

Whether you require a tourist visa or not, you must meet the eligibility requirements for a "Standard Visitor" to travel to the UK. When your visa application is processed, or when you cross the border into the UK, you will need to prove to the British authorities that: 

- you will leave the UK at the end of your visit,  

- you are able to support yourself and your dependents during your trip (or will receive external funding to support you),  

- you can pay for your ticket out of the country (or receive external financing to do so), 

- you will not live in the UK for long periods with frequent or successive visits, nor make the UK your primary residence. 

How Do I Get a Visa for Scotland?

Do you need a visa to travel to the United Kingdom? You can apply for a Standard Visitor visa (valid for up to 6 months) for your tourist trip to Scotland 3 months before departure. 

To apply: go online to complete a Standard Visitor visa application form and pay the application fee (£115). The next step is to go to a UK-approved visa center in your country of residence to provide your biometric data (photograph, fingerprints).  

Are you travelling with your family? You must apply for a visa (and pay the associated fees) for each family member. They must then each make their own appointment at the nearest visa center.
